Victor’s Vectors: Adding ADS-B to your cockpit

-->

Gr-adsbWhat As many pilots know, the FAA is beginning to implement a nationwide ADS-B infrastructure of ground stations to improve traffic efficiency and improve situational awareness in the cockpit. The FAA announced a dual link decision using the 1090 MHz ES and UAT mediums for ADS-B, and has proposed a mandate that all aircraft have ADS-B Out capabilities by January 1, 2020. Garmin has several products that meet the FAA’s proposed ADS-B requirements including the GTX 330 and GTX 33 with Extended Squitter (ES) capability. The ES transmission capability on Garmin’s Mode S transponders lets general aviation aircraft meet the FAA’s proposed requirements because the ES transmissions will automatically provide position, velocity and heading information. At AOPA’s recent Summit meeting and convention, they asked some industry experts (including Garmin) about ADS-B and here’s what they had to say.
