U23 cyclist Kyle Torres recaps season using Edge 705
--> He’s only 15
and he is fired up. Kyle Torres has several more years before he can race pro
and already he’s making the most of his training and racing by using the Edge 705.
Last year, Kyle was the youngest amateur to ride the Solvang Time Trial course
at the Tour of California just before Team Garmin’s Dave Zabriskie and other
pros raced the 15-mile course. This past season found him racing overseas as
well as collecting some top finishes here stateside.
Kyle: As I reflect on last season, I am happy that I had some good
results and I was able to learn a lot from my results that were not as good as
I hoped for. Last season was my first year racing in the Junior 15/16 age class.
There were so many races and exciting events throughout the season. I can only
focus on a few. The season started with some good
results. I won the Calville Bay stage race in Las Vegas
and Stage 1 of the Valley
Of The Sun Stage race. I
also had podium finishes at a few other races. At Junior Road Nationals this
year in Oregon,
I finished 16th in the Time Trial. This doesn’t sound great, but when you consider that 14 of the 15 other
finishers ahead of me were all a year older than me and will be moving up to
the 17/18 age class next season, it gives me hope that I can pull out a
National Championship next year.
Perhaps my
greatest accomplishment for the season was to be selected as one of six 15/16
year olds to go to Belgium
for three weeks to train and race. Here is a picture of me and the team, posing with Team Garmin's Tyler Farrar at the Eneco Tour. This was by far the best experience a young
bike racer can have. Although I did not have great finishes in the races that I
was entered in, the learning experience cannot be duplicated anywhere. This
trip gave me the insight that I needed to come back next year and have some
great results in Europe.
Now, as I look at next season, I
have some pretty lofty goals. One of them is to win a National Championship in
the Time Trial and I also want to do well in the Junior National Road Race. I
also hope to be invited back to Belgium
where I would like to get at least one podium finish. To do this, I am logging
more training miles than ever before and my Garmin Edge 705 is there for me
every step of the way, logging every mile with tons of data. It has also saved
me from getting lost many times. I will report back as the new season
progresses.
