According to several traffic researchers it requires only simple changes of the electronic locator, GPS, to save thousands of citizens from entering into tables of fatalities. But the development is blocked by politicians. They fear that people would feel monitored.

“We can probably reduce fatality to approximately one forth of the deaths a year, if you really use all the technical tools we have”

Most traffic accidents, which ends in fatal accidents, is caused in most cases, that a motorist disregards the speed limit. But what may prevent the fatalities occurring, is sitting right in front of the nose at the driver, namely the GPS.

“After all, gps technology developed so much that we can monitor the cars precise position and speed. This can be combined with digital maps, so you can compare with the posted speed limits at a given place”.

Through GPS, it would therefore be possible to monitor the speed of all cars, which move in the US roads, and warn motorists when the speed was too high. According to traffic researchers an action would save the society for 950 billion dollars a year.

“It would be a good investment. It’s just a question whether there is political will to implement it”.

But politicians are reluctant.

“We take small steps in that direction, but a total surveillance society, I say no, no and no to,” says the chairman of the road safety commission.

“We need to have fewer road fatalities, but we must have a popular support for it. We must make saving lives in traffic to a popular engagement”.

New technological opportunities

• GPS communicates with a satellite that can monitor traffic. The technique allows the GPS warns the driver if the road is too high. Or, the GPS can rat on speed sinners to the police.
• New technology can also prevent intoxicated drivers from driving, the GPS can monitor driving and rest time rules, and a mobile text message from the GPS to the owner to stop the car, if it is stolen.

Critial voices
Other, more critical voices, claims the the GPS kids tracking devices will damage the bond of trust between parent and child. Some raise concers that the tracking devices migt give a false sense of security and that the technology isn’t as reliable as it seems.
