Peg’s Posts: Boston recap

Race day 017 Yesterday’s Boston Marathon brought a course record and a record number of participants. Congrats to Garmin-sponsored athlete Ryan Hall for his 4th place finish, fastest Boston ever for an American. Despite a brisk breeze early in the morning, we had ideal racing conditions, complete with blue skies and a light wind that tailed the 30,000 runners from Hopkinton to Boston. To sum it up in a few words (before I board a plane back to KC): running the 114th Boston Marathon was an amazing experience, start to finish. I fell in love with the quaint little towns and friendly spectators in the early miles. My race strategy was to start out conservatively, saving the quads for the rolling hills later on the course. So I made the most of a slower start by running along the left side, high-fiving as many kids as I could in the first four miles. Then it was time to focus on the race ahead and strategize each rolling hill, flat and water stop. Forerunner 110 proved to be a perfect pacing partner, minding my pace over each mile so I could stick close to my 8:30 mi/mile average. Thanks to even pacing, I was able to pick it up in the final miles as I ran through the longest “finish chute” ever with thousands of spectators cheering and chanting. I finished in 3:43:05, exceeding my goal and meeting my qualifying time again. Replay my run in Garmin Connect.
