Galileo Open Service SIS ICD Published; No License Fees

-->

The European Commission has published an updated Galileo Open Service Signal-In-Space Interface Control Document (OS SIS ICD) to inform receiver manufacturers, application developers, and service providers on technical specifications of the future Galileo system and what they can expect in terms of performance. As reported by gps kids watch World in October 2009, the Commission has abandoned an earlier position whereby it had sought to defray some system expenses by selling manufacturing licenses. No fees will be required for manufacturers to design, develop, make, or sell receivers capable of using the Galileo Open Service signal. Manufacturers are required to apply for the free-of-charge licenses, which “will be provided on a non-discriminatory basis in accordance with European Union rules and international commitments taken within the framework of the European GNSS Programmes.”
